The James Craik (1727-1814) from Arbigland, a medical graduate of the University of Edinburgh, who was an army surgeon in the west indies. In his later career he was appointed Physician general of the United States Army and was George Washington’s personal physician at the time of his death.

The Edward Milligan MD ( 1786- 1833) , an inspirational man who spent most of his working life as a shoemaker before gaining distinction as a lecturer of medical science in Edinburgh. A self-taught linguistic and mathematician he paid for his own education and achieved great eminence among the learned and more remarkably many of his achievements whilst he was completely blind.
